The Downland Scrub of the farthest northeastern reaches is a strange place. Also called the Flashing Scrub, it is filled with weirdly volatile plant life. Virtually every plant which grows in this region is explosive when dried and powdered, and even one, the shot-barrel plant, explodes naturally, while still alive. Because of this, and the relatively arid climate of the area, it's a frequent occurence for there to be bright flashes throughout the day as some long-dead shrubs finally explode, giving the region its name.

Several shrubs and grasses that are commonly found in the southernmost part of the Flashing Scrub are key ingredient in the firework's sold during the Halbjahrlichfest, and so those whose trade is to make those fireworks have become fairly familiar with the behaviour of these explosive flora.
